If I were a police person...
In my train carriage this afternoon I saw a poster featuring a split portrait of half transit officer and half policeman. The legend read "Police officers and transit officers have more in common than you think."
If I were a police person, or perhaps a member of the Police Union required to approve this particular campaign, I think I'd be a bit miffed. The purpose of the campaign is to lend authority to the transit guards so the nasty people take them a bit more seriously. That's fine, but it takes a lot more work, both foot- and paper- to be an actual cop.
So, I think there's been a bit of subtle placating going on, for the cop half of the poster is of a more attractive face with better defined jaw and cheekbones, slightly more tanned and healthier looking skin--definitely less droopy and tired-looking than the guard--and a hairier neck. Most telling I think is the shadowing of the cap over the eyes: the cop eye shows much more clearly than the guard eye, which is largely in shadow.
So, it's not wildly obvious to the casual glance ("Yep" says the brain, "two halves of two different faces put together, but it mostly works as a single face, good enough, move on.") but if you look closely the cop half looks generally healthier, fitter, more attractive, more masculine and more trustworthy than the transit guard half.
The police badge is also much brighter and appears closer to the top of the picture than the transit guard patch.
Any thoughts people? Has a Deal been struck? You may borrow my authority as long as I look prettier?
