Art and abart

Had a lovely outing this afternoon to the launch of an art exhibition featuring one of Husband's workmates J.

I wasn't wildly impressed with the work in the first few spaces; this was mildly worrying, for I'm prone to honesty. The pieces were little better than craft, in my opinion. Clearly I was missing something because they just didn't talk to me on an aesthetic level, nor were they produced with any great skill that I could see. It was OK, but nothing I wanted to spend any time with. Oh dear.

The back wall was a bit more promising with some textile work, which told me a few stories and was fun to look at. One of the works even moved me to check the price. This was better.

Things picked up enormously in a side niche with some really interesting textural work in acrylics on canvas with the odd bit of mixed media. All the works here were in monochrome greys, but it still worked. Each piece was built of of layers and layers of different brush effects, and some had hair. To me they looked like abstract studies of skin, and later this was confirmed by the artist who was most happy that someone "got" it. I know how she feels.

And yes, fortunately for everyone's sakes, the work I liked the most and found most engaging was indeed by J so it was no trouble to wax enthusiastically and curiously about her work. Such a relief! So I was able to have several chats to her about colour (or lack thereof), balancing pattern and texture, and lighting and display. Gosh it's nice to talk to people about this stuff - it's a conversation that really only works in person where you can point and wave hands around.

Hmmmm. Maybe I did the crazy lady thing again. Oh well. If the cap fits...

We didn't stay long, and then took the long coastal route home so I got to be out of the house for a bit longer. I enjoyed watching the cloud formations over the ocean, where lots of Weather was happening despite the sunny clear skies overhead. I felt absolutely cooked, and particularly steamed, so I was astonished to discover later that the max temp was only 22C with only mild humidity. I guess fibro was doing its thing again - I was pretty shattered by the time we got home.

Many thanks to Husband for making sure this happened.
