I am pleased to report (albeit second-hand) that the baby doves have recovered from their fright yesterday and have been seen fluttering various short distances around the folks' patio. Parent doves have also been seen to coo encouragement.
There was some concern when the youngest spent several hours sitting on a step, but I've just had a report that they're both now roosting well out of danger.
If they nest there again next year I must set up a web cam.
I was enjoying the noise and fluttering of at least a dozen small birds in my own backyard today, until it occurred to me that I was listening to alarm calls. A furry nudge at my ankle suggested the source, but Cally's in no shape to hunt any more and seemed only vaguely interested in the flying snacks.
I've planted lots of grevillias and am always pleased to see a honeyeater feeding from them.
I'm very glad to have come from and now live in a suburb with lots of trees and therefore birds. It was in fact one of the reasons I chose this area over Morley/Dianella. And apart from the rats-of-the-sky I'm always pleased to see and hear birds in the city. It must seem strange to at least some tourists to hear parrots and kookaburras in a (mildly) urban setting.
