It was OK, but the 'nasty fantasy that subverts standard fantasy tropes' was done better by Joe Abercrombie, IMO. And RM is not fooling anyone except maybe himself with the 'each book is a proper self-contained book, no really' stance. But not bad, I'll read the next few, and I hope they get more interesting.
