For those who came in late, click here for the story of Vlad the Impala so far. tl;dr: I made a lol and had a think about the nature of social networks. There have been developments since then.

In this post I'd like to deconstruct (and thus ruin) a joke, and as a bonus briefly (ha!) analyse a lesson learned about shamelessly exploiting harnessing social media for fun and you've got to be kidding profit.

Started the day with an exciting development: had a shower, dried off and got completely dressed without having to negotiate for spoons! I just, like, DID it! Woo!

It's several weeks since I've even looked at The Book, which I think is a not unreasonable response to the havoc my life has become. Read more... )

Here, have some of my unworked NaNo crud. Not today's, but it hardly makes a difference. I apologise to the half a dozen people who might read this and suffer from its awfulness (you have been warned). And oops, sorry for bringing about the collapse of civilization and hastening the heat death of the universe with my hobby.

Please note that I am yet to sort out the minor issue of character names. In other sections I have dialogue with X, Y, and Z. Poor undifferentiated things (it's early in the piece and they are in fact not yet differentiated), but it keeps me moving along.

Am very proud of the writing progress for today, for though I felt particularly unwilling I ended up with a fresh 700 words in the dreaded beginning bit. That almost qualifies as actual rather than token progress. Read more... )

Fortunately for the purposes of NaNoWriMo I was struck by inspiration and did my writing session this morning, before breakfast. Before, indeed, checking my e-mail or opening the first web browser for the day. Not so much struck by inspiration as dragged by it to the laptop.

Did my writing session today. A few hundred words of honest prose that one of my characters wrote for me to set up a scene. How kind of them. I think.

About an hour ago I settled in to write a brief confession post that--despite my declaration of just yesterday that I would endeavour to make some kind of progress on The Book every day--I had failed to make any kind of progress on The Book today.

In theory Nanowrimo should be a relatively easy prospect for me this year, as I have easily 50K or more words planned out and ready to go into The Book. With the basic story structure in place I'm no longer gripped by the fear of narrative drift, so even if I churn out bad words, they've a good chance of being relevant if not salvageable or inspiring.

I've just drafted a couple of hundred words of The Book. They're quite important words in terms of establishing the context, but having written them I'm not sure I can live with myself. Fortunately there's not much more of this to come. Hopefully none at all, apart from tortuous rewrites and edits. I need a drink.

The thought bubbled to the surface today that in The Book I have opportunities to be very clever, and subtle with it too. I hope I don't make a mess of those opportunities, but hopefully a good beta reader will help me out of any traps. It's quite simple really: I need situation X to mirror conversation Y, either in multiple instances, or over the course of two much larger narrative threads. But I don't want to do it so obviously that the reader will be able to draw immediate parallels between characters and situations. It will be more a case of political situations, problems and solutions being mirrored in completely different environments.

In other words, people are the same all over, even when they are not exactly human people.

It's been a while since I've been able to write anything, and it looks like it will be a while yet. I have managed to back-track and correct some early story notes, so that's progress of a sort. No actual prose has yet flowed, but I have not yet flirted with despair. And so, a sample of today's progress:

Today was a good day for a few more story elements to come together in The Book. I wonder when it will become permissable to start calling it The Manuscript? 20K? Or the official transition from outlining to writing prose as intended for publication?

I believe I have just managed to insert a space shuttle and a xeno-ecological survey team into The Book. We'll just see how that works out, eh?

I went to work again today for the second time this week, for a total of 5 whole hours! It's not a lot, but it's more than I managed during the month of September. I've been working on my data remediation/zombie destruction document, but rather disappointingly the zombies haven't made much of an appearance during the latest round of edits.

Why? )
