I will be very pleased when tomorrow's tradesman (due "about 10am") has completed his work.

As I write this a Nice Man is up on the roof measuring up the patio roof area for replacement. I've had a lot of information thrown at me in the last ten forty minutes and I'll attempt to record it here.

tl;dr On Thursday 18th October 2014 at roughly 4pm Sector 7 was struck by an extreme hailstorm which destroyed our patio roof and caused some water damage to the ceiling. Also apologies for timey wimey vagueness and possible cruelty to tenses. Spoons have not been in good supply lately.

Many weeks ago a "FOR LEASE" sign appeared on a house not far from mine here at Sector 7. That's unusual in the current economic climate, we thought. The rental market is bursting at the seams – demand is high, and properties get usually snapped up by desperate renters at the first hint of opportunity. Why go to the extra expense and trouble of putting up a sign?

The next post I'm supposed to write is a description of a doctor's appointment some two weeks ago, and the modifications to my medications that arose from that visit. This isn't it, but I've been reminded (hi Mum) that I haven't blogged here in a month and so I thought I'd ramble for a bit at the traditional blogging hour of 1:30 am.

About a month ago we took delivery of a load of mulch via the Mulchnet service, which is a marketplace that links people seeking mulch and tree contractors who have fresh woodchips to get rid of. You can register for free mulch and hope and wait, or you can pay for just delivery which will increase your chances of getting some, or like us you can pay a bit more (still much less than landscaping supplies cost) for a definite delivery when a load becomes available in the local area.

We paid in cash, but a couple of days ago we received an invoice for that amount from the tree contractor.

Seems like quite a while since I last managed a simple what-I-got-up-to-today post, but today I seemed to get a lot done, which feels worthy of note.

Today Yesterday I had the kind of day that pretty much demands a blog post, if only for the purposes of propping up my indeed quite dodgy memory. There were thrills and spills, new toys, broken toys, technical trickery, rather too much time on the phone to all the wrong people, and something else that escapes me, but may yet return in the process of writing this post. In which case I'll probably come back and edit that last bit and you'll never know about the lapse.

Or not.

ETA: Now I remember. I discovered that one of the cats had vomited on one of my favourite books. A paperback.

And now it's the next day and I'm lost and rambling. This is a bit long.

Have just discovered more eggs in the fish pond, which might explain a few things.

Today was round 2 of electrical works at Sector 7, and I'll try to remember all the relevant details, although right now I'm exhausted.

Visits from tradesmen are always interesting, in the Chinese curse sense. Today's electrician's visit was rather information dense so I thought it best to record it here. And, you know, complain a little.

We've met Coryphistes sp. - Bark-Mimicking Grasshopper before but last night I came across one on the inside of the house. It obligingly stood quite still while I took some pictures of all the dust and cat fur gathering at the edge of our tiles.

I hope the presence of water snails in my pond is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. They've bred recently but I assume the fish will keep their numbers under control. That might explain their drop in appetite recently. Certainly the baby snails are well within mouthful range, and they strike me as something a carnivorous fish would really go for.

The fish are quite thoroughly domesticatd life actually, and amazingly tame to boot. For those who came in late, these are mostly minnows, with three Western Pygmy Perch. One picture shows them happily swimming around my hand, the rest are crowd scenes.

I'm sure local twitchers will have no trouble in identifying this little bird for me. I see a lot of them in my garden and they really seem to enjoy the thickets that I cultivate^ for their protection. I'd say this is a bug eater by the look of that beak, but I could be wrong (brain not really in a bird-identifying space right now).
