Welcome to an exciting post about one of my major appliances. You may want to skip this.

Delighted though I would be to embroider a tale of adventure and excitement of the events of this evening, I am stuffed (yet grateful) after waiting 2 hours for the RAC to come rescue The Catmobile. Home now. The problem? A little bit of rubber fell off a clutch switch. Car she no go. Home now, and cursing the bad mobile reception that follows everywhere I go and which forbade me from live Tweeting the whole experience to fill in time and loneliness.

Perfect Swancon spoon prep :-(

Had one of those "Oh that's not good" flashes on the freeway this afternoon.

Did an important thing this afternoon: called a gas person to come and try to repair the switches on my gas stove. I've been down to a single working burner for some time now, but with the beginning of the end of the microwave I felt my cooking options were getting a little precarious. It's hard to grill porridge.

Today I got that warm fuzzy feeling of well-timed and justified maintenance. I also got that sinking feeling of maintenance deferred perhaps a little too long.

Up to 40 mg escitalopram (+ 80mg fluoxetine) (or whatever it's called - do drug companies not realise that sick people have to remember these names?).

Things are falling apart, or rather off. Got home this afternoon to discover the long skinny brake light in The Catmobile's rear spoiler was hanging by its wiring. This required the failure of four plastic tabs and an adhesive strip so I imagine it took a while. One wonders what's next to go.

I wonder if anyone else can confirm my observation this morning that there seemed to be a lot more school children out on foot this morning? And in bigger groups?

Fun with windscreens )

All sorts of things happened today, but for this post I'll concentrate on The Catmobile's breakdown which was, all things considered, one of the best breakdowns one is likely to have. I'm pretty good at doing the bright side thing, but really, this just made it easy. What's the opposite of Murphy's Law?

So, short version: I had a flat battery, but it went OK.

The long version )

Today--being the day after yesterday--I unsurprisingly had to slow down. So I didn't get up early and squeeze in a few hours at work before taking Husband to the physio.

But I did get a few things done )

The Catmobile is at the medium-good trustworthy mechanics today for a service, gearstick bush replacement, and general review. I've had The Call.

I've been reading up a little on car engine transmission types*. I was raised on the easy-to-manage straight dichotomy between automatic and manual. Until today I'd always assumed my passionate defence of the manual made me a 'control freak', but I've discovered that my relationship to my car is more complex than that. I've also for the first time applied many thoughts on design to cars. I'm not sure I can explain this properly in one go, but I'll give it a try.

Disclaimer: I don't do 4WD or off-road driving. It's all suburbs and freeways in my universe.

Other disclaimer: This wants to be an essay, but it's just going to be a rough old blog post, so it's long AND disorganised.

One more disclaimer for luck: I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

Last disclaimer: No more disclaimers. It's a blog FFS.

Today I turned off the car stereo and really really listened to The Catmobile on the back streets and on the freeway. I remain convinced that the engine is in fine fettle (last year was a struggle to overcome a niggling timing problem that was solved with a new timing chain and an injector service). And that the interior is in fine rattle. I tried being extra kind on the gear changes which helped a little, but my impression of sticky ickiness remains. It used to go *snick* all by itself.

So then I got curious )

Did you know the cup holders in a 2009 Hyundai Tiburon come with "side tensioners in order to stabilise differently sized containers"? I didn't even realise I needed side tensioners.

Other fun car facts I learned today (plus bonus/warning of me-type angsting) )

Spent much of today unconscious so didn't achieve a great deal, but this evening I managed to do not one but two really stupid things.

The Catmobile had a flat tyre this morning. Fortunately it happened overnight so I didn't get wet, or crushed on the freeway. The RAC came over and swapped out the spare (although I did get reasonably dirty getting it out of the boot myself), and I went to the local tyre place to get it repaired. No problem. Read more... )

I believe that this is a picture of a red 2005 Hyundai Tiberon:

Pretty, isn't it? Only $19,900.

And? )

This morning was not a success, for I was held unconscious for all of it. I hate this particular form of CFS, it feels like my head is being held underwater. However, I picked up enough in the early afternoon to give work a go. I've been hoping to try an afternoon session at work, as a second chunk after a few hours in the morning, so today I achieved half of that. I hit one goal post at least.

Had a curious experience on the road this morning. Someone drove through a red light at pretty much the same time I was driving through a green light. Do not try this at home.
